Top 3 ways to have a fun Easter with your dog

Here’s our top 3 activities for the whole family, including your dog, to enjoy this Easter Weekend:

1 Easter carrot hunt

Swap chocolate eggs for carrots to ensure that your dog doesn’t miss out on an exciting game of hide and seekThis Morning puppy Digby had great fun hunting carrots with dog in training Denby and Community Dog Quill!

“A good run around is what dogs love most and having some healthy carrot treats to sniff out and eat will make it extra special!” says Elly, from our Health & Welfare Team.

Get the whole family involved with hiding the carrots and encouraging your dog to find them all

2. Go on a long walk

If you’ve over-indulged on too many Easter treats, the best way to work off a) the sugar rush and b) the extra calories is to go on a lovely long, spring walk with your dog, friends and family.

3. Homemade dog treats

Dogs for Good’s very own Mary Barky (aka volunteer, Andrea) has loads of yummy dog-biscuit recipes and they couldn’t be easier to make. Bake some special doggy Easter biscuits, so your dog has something to enjoy whilst you’re demolishing all those Easter eggs. See the recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 150g plain flour
  • 1 heaped tbsp cornflour
  • 60g butter*
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp marmite
  • 1 tbsp milk (optional)

Method:

Pre-heat the oven t0o 150C / 130C fan and grease a baking tray.

  1. In a large bowl combine the plain flour, cornflour and bring together with a knife
  2. Then, add the egg and marmite continuing to bring the mixture together with your hands and lightly kneed
  3. If the dough feels too dry just add a splash of milk
  4. Flour a flat surface and roll out the dough to the approximate depth of a pound coin
  5. Use any Easter shape cutters that you have, like carrots or eggs – or they look great as bones too!
  6. Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes, or until they are golden.

*If preferred, you can substitute some of the butter with fat from any cooked meat. Bacon fat is perfect for this.

We hope you have lots of fun this Easter with your dog. Please share your photos on our Facebook and Twitter pages including #dogsaregood.
