Following her GCSEs, Jemima was excited for the future. Her excellent results prompted aspirations of attending a top university alongside her school friends. But at just 16 years old, her life changed, and the dreams evaporated as she began to suffer debilitating health conditions.

“I felt like I had lost everything. In my first year of sixth form, I only managed to attend school for 20% of the year. I spent most of my A-Levels trying to teach myself the subjects while in bed.”

It wasn’t just her education that suffered. Jemima heard less and less from her friends and felt like she had lost her direction in life. But at 23 years old, Jemima was partnered with Dogs for Good assistance dog Albert, who changed everything.

By assisting with daily tasks, Albert makes a huge difference to Jemima’s life. “Because Albert supports me on my commute to work and during my working day, I felt confident to apply for the job I wanted, not the job I felt I had to have because of my disability. I work for one of the best law firms in the world and can take my career as far as I want to, because I don’t have to worry about having to ask colleagues to help me all the time.

It can be difficult working for a large company when you have an invisible disability. It’s impossible for everyone I encounter to know about my condition, and I feel awkward asking people to hold a door or pick something up for me. I used to plan what I was going to wear to work because I didn’t want to ask a colleague to help me take my jumper or jacket off. Now Albert can help me with everything, so I can get on with my day and give 100% to my work.

Dogs for Good has done an amazing job to train Albert to help me and I’m so thankful to have him. I can hardly believe how different my life is!”

There are so many people like Jemima waiting for a special dog to change their life. Please donate today to help us continue training these wonderful dogs.
