It doesn’t matter whether your dog’s young or old, big or small, dogs love to learn new things and it’s a great way to build the bond with your dog and help you both get the most out of your relationship.
This is the next in our Teach Your Dog … features, and we will be looking at how to teach your dog ‘on your bed’. The perfect way to show off how clever your dog is!
Make sure you have plenty of treats to reward.
Step 1
Choose a bed or blanket that you want your dog to lie down on. Stand a few steps away and throw some treats onto the bed to encourage him onto it.
Step 2
Instead of throwing the treats, now, introduce a point towards the bed – hopefully your dog will follow this. Once he’s on the bed, then give him a treat.
Step 3
Once he is predictably going onto the bed when you point, hold off throwing the treats until he offers a down/sit position on the bed. As soon as he sits/lies down then give him some treats.
Step 4
When he is doing this well, then move slightly further away, point at the bed and he should go over to it then lie down, where you will give him some treats.
